we'll begin with that developing story out of brazil. deadly chaos at a nightclub. early yesterday morning. killing a staggering 233 people. many of them college students celebrating their last weekend of summer break. it happened at kiss nightclub in santa maria. recovery workers now say they're hearing the eerie sound of ring tones. we're in santa maria with the latest. >> reporter: smoke filled the air when the first firefighters entered the nightclub. where shirtless men were already trying to rescue some of the injured. emergency vehicles arrived not realizing the extent of the tragedy they faced. chaos and terror among survivors and the body of victims all around. the fire broke out at about 2:00 in the morning at a nightclub called kiss in santa maria in

bra sail's southern most state. the club was packed with some 2,000 people, twice its legal capacity according to officials >> translator: people who were inside the facility when they came out, security guards blocked the exit preventing the crowd from leaving and the tragedy grew worse. >> reporter: people inside said when they came out security guards blocked exits to prevent people from leaving. that's when the crowd started panicking. this is santa maria's local gymnasium. but it's turned into a makeshift morning. they're trying to identify the relatives who were young people in their late teens, early 20s. as the coffins for the many victims were lined up investigators searched for the cause of the fire, which tore through the sound isolation in

the roof. she headed to santa maria to personally oversee the government's response to the tragedy. it was the end of the summer holiday season in brazil, the last chance to party. for many young people due back at school or work on monday. zblm and coming up in just under 30 minutes, we're live from santa maria, brazil, where this tragedy struck. president obama and hillary clinton sat down for their first joint interview on 60 minutes on sunday. these one-time rivals exchanged compliments and laughs. clinton admitted they bury the hatchet after the bitter 2008 campaign. he would endorse her for president in 2016? >> reporter: president obama and

snow shut down runways in salt lake city yesterday. flights were grounded on icy runways. 200 flights were canceled at o'ha o'hare. new yorkers went seven days without temperatures cracking the above-freezing mark. a look ahead at the storm this morning. >> hi, there. it's been rather messy out there. we're looking at winter precipitation. through the parts of the midwest, some snow moving through the upper peninsula of michigan. temperatures through parts, areas like illinois as well as into detroit. we're looking at those numbers just above freezing. that means, we're still going to see some wintry mix, through mid-atlant mid-atlantic, pittsburgh and washington, d.c., light snow in arkton and we're going to see the potential for freezing rain anywhere you're seeing in pink as we go through really the

morning commute and that includes interstate 9 a and many of those areas we're talking to about 10:00 a.m. for new york city. freezing rain mixing up until about noon. some of the advisories out there. anywhere in blue, right there in that purple shading, we have a freezing rain advisory, that is until 10:00 a.m. in the north, 7:00 a.m., for buffalo, you could see an inch of snow as we go throughout the day. we said last week there's going to be a warmup and the warmup is going to arrive today down towards the south. look at those temperatures for dallas, 76. atlanta, 65. it gets better for the southeast. tuesday, notice that warm air surges up for the south to chicago. remember last week, we showed that building with the freezing rain on top of it. that's not going to be a concern today. because that warm air has to go

flood waters trapped the women and their children. they stuffed the child into a waterproof duffel bag that rescuers were able to air lift to safety. this is just amazing. at least one person is reported dead and several others injured from the weather in this region. all right, two people are lucky to be alived this morning after their small plane crashed into the hudson river in yonkers, new york. it went down sunday evening. moments after the pilot put out a mayday call. off-duty detective commandeer boat with his 12-year-old son and the two assisted in the rescue. >> we had access to the pilot boat. we were able to get abroad and start it up and get the two victims in the water. >> wow.

aren't you glad that he happened to be so close by with his kid. they were taken to the nearby hospital with a hypothermia. the town of vixon after two tank barges loaded with crude oil struck a bridge and sprang a leak early sunday morning. the coast guard is trying to determine how many gallons of oil may have spilled into the river. more on the lance armstrong. a they're saying that he did not come clean to oprah winfrey. they said armstrong has until february 6th to reveal everything to have any chance of having his lifetime ban rescinded.

that city's outof control gun violence has take on the lives of four members within the same family. ronnie chambers was gunned down early sunday morning. he became the fourth sibling in the same family to be killed by gun fire. he had two brothers and a sister who were also fatality gund down within the city limits. casey anthony is back in the news, thanks to this from the orlando sentinel, it reports that she has filed for bankruptcy. her petition reportedly states that she owes $800,000. she said that she's facing a mountain of debt and several lawsuits related to her daughter's disappearance. anthony was of course acquitted for her daughter's murder in 2011.

at a brazilian nightclub and the new details coming out, they're heart breaking and disturbing. a staggering 233 people killed, many of them college students celebrating their last weekend of summer break at a popular nightclub called kiss. this is santa maria, in the southern most state of brazil. recovery workers say they're hearing the sounds of cell phones ringing as families hoping their loved ones will answer. any definitive word on what caused this? >> reporter: not yet, john. in fact, right behind me over my left shoulder is the nightclub kiss and inside right now investigators are coming through the rubble looking for clues. they're fairly sure it's related to this pyrotech nicks show. someone apparently had fireworks in their hands. but the investigation continues.

i have to say, what's scary about this whole thing, once you get over and look at this nightclub it only has a single entrance and exit. it's squeezed between two buildings. no lateral exits. no exit out of the back. it's a narrow door. when you have 1,000, 2,000 packed into this space at night, the lights are on and off, in some ways this was a tragedy announced you wonder how anyone could have gotten these people out. >> a sea of chaos must have been unimaginable. one of the most disturbing things that we're hearing that security guards may have been blocking people, why might this be? >> well, we have seen a lot, especially on social media, facebook, people commenting at the very beginning when the fire started the security guards

didn't know what was going on. they were outside. again, just this one door. maybe a fight over the drinks. someone didn't want to pay their bill and wanted to squeezed out. it hasn't been confirmed. we haven't heard to talk to any investigators who will confirm this. we'll be talking to more survivors today about what they saw and what they heard. john? >> early it's still early. officials talking about the possibility of criminal charges? >> they're definitely talk of that, john, in part because all of the licensing of this nightclub had had expired in august. the northern hemisphere summer. all of its paperwork wasn't in order. did they have a license to be operating, emergency procedures in place, all of these could lead to some kind of charges in the future.

>> we're hearing there 20,000 people, who were these people, are we talking college students here? >> yes, this is the real tragedy. this is a college town. four universities here. the big federal university and apparently a good half of the people who died went to that federal university. they were having a party there the other night. the agriculture students were having a big party. i talked to one boy last night a 19-year-old who lost his 24-year-old brother. they were studying agronomy together. this is a huge tragedy for everyone. >> chasta darlington, thank you for being here. lot more to get you caught up on this morning. a sloppy wintry storm moving east. an ice mess from indy down to kentucky. cancelling flights at o'hare in

he was once a national hero in cuba. then pitcher jose con trer yas defected to the u.s. now he's returned to his homeland. very first athlete to return under new immigration rules. cnn traveled with contreras in this exclusive report that you can go home again. >> reporter: this isn't much to look at, but for one cuban legend it is truly a field of dreams. jose contreras was once a star pitcher in cuba. he was dubbed the bronzed titan. when he defected in 2002, he like all sports stars who defected, were banned from cuba.

that is, until now. i'm happy to be back. here with my people and my fans, he said. it is a dream come true. an impossible dream. then in january, cuban officials lifted the restrictions for most cubans to travel abroad and gave many living in exile the ability to return. with a change in immigration laws, more cuban sports stars who defected are expected to begin returning. no doubt that the cuban government that they'll bring back with them those multimillion-dollar salaries. more than the salaries on cuban's national team combined. he said that those big paydays didn't ease the longing to see his family back home.

at first, we were missing the past, it was tough. ten years, not seeing my brother. he said, but everyone is good now. and just enjoying the moment. a decade outside of the island convinced him that he would be forgotten by his countrymen. but he can't go anywhere here without people asking for a photo. or being embraced by former teammates. this pickup game draws other legends of cuban baseball. nursing an injury, contreras plays first base instead of pitching. once he recovers he hopes to return to playing professionally soon. this is hardly the major leagues. after a home run, the play is interrupted to look for the ball. the only one they have. and at the end, no one can even tell you what the score was. for a long lost son of cuba it

brazil. funerals begin today of victims of this night club inferno. 233 people killed, almost half of college students celebrating their last weekend of summer break at the kiss nightclub this is located in santa maria in the southernmost state of brazil. they are hearing the awful, eerie sounds of ring tones as desperate families hope that their loved ones will answer. shasta darlingt toton joins us more. >> reporter: i am just up the street from the kiss nightclub. investigators are inside, trying to find clues and narrow down what exactly caused this inferno saturday night/sunday morning. it is very quiet. you will see a lot of passers bye, journalists, early sunday morning, an entirely different

situation. smoke filled the air when the first firefighters entered the nightclub, where shirtless men were already trying to rescue some of the injured. emergency vehicles arrived not realizing the extent of the tragedy they faced. chaos and terror among survivors and the bodies of victims all around. the fire broke out at about 2:00 in the morning at a nightclub called kiss in santa maria in brazil's southernmost state. the club packed with almost 2,000 people, twice its capacity say legal officials. >> translator: people informed them when they came out, they blocked the exit to prevent people from leaving and that's when the crowd started panicking and the tragedy grew worse. >> reporter: when they came out, security guards blocked exits to prevent people from leaving he says, that's when the crowd started panicking. this is santa maria's local gym

pace it's been turned into a makeshift morgue. trying to identify relatives, young people, late teens, early 20s, died of asphyxiation and some were trampled to death. as the coffins were lined up, investigators tore for the search of the fire. brazilian president dilma rousseff headed to santa maria to oversee the tragedy. this was the last chance to party for many young people due back at school or work on monday. now, this is the really sad thing. this is a college town and thha of course, affected everyone. when we were at the gymnasium, i

spoke to a 19-year-old boy who was looking for his brother. he was supposed to go out with him, and he decided last minute to stay home. they were sort of joined at the hip, john. >> shasta, one of the things we're hearing out of this horrible incident are the stories that somehow security guards were blocking people from getting out. why might this be? >> what we've heard from survivors, security guards might have been initially blocking the exits because they didn't realize there was a fire. this has to be investigated. that will about one of the lines of investigation. if they somehow made this tragedy worse than it needed to be. we're not here to judge that we'll let the investigators tell us where that takes them. part of the problem, one narrow

exit. this building squeezed between two other buildings. no lateral exit, no exit out the back. one exit, and if security guards were blocking it, it would have made it impossible for hundreds and hundreds, apparently 2,000 people, to get out, john. >> shasta darlington in brazil, thank you very much. up in the next half hour, author and attorney john barolek. he represented victims and families of the station fire in rhode island. he also wrote a book called "killer show." >> did you see it? quite a love fest. hillary clinton and president obama sat down on "60 minutes" over the weekend. they seemed relaxed and shared laughs. the president called her one of

the job is for firefighters when they are dealing with fires and cold temperatures. notice for parts of the midwest, minneapolis, we showed you that video of the freezing rain and snow. temperatures near the freezing mark. same for detroit. be careful for the threat of slick roadways. as we move toward the east, the same storm system is bringing winter precipitation through parts of the mid-atlantic, you can see through areas of pittsburgh to norfolk, looking at the wintry mix there. this is the band we're really concerned about. especially slick driving conditions. interstate 95, washington, d.c., and even raleigh, north carolina. you could see freezing rain. much of that over by 12:00 this afternoon. and then for new england, we are going to see the threat for snow, freezing rain and sleet as we go later this evening into tomorrow. here is a look at some advisories, you can see for the northeast. mainly through 7:00 a.m. and you can see for areas across parts

rubble of the kiss nightclub in santa maria. reports they are hearing cell phones ringing, cell phones of people not there to answer them. the fire shares some eerie similarities with the station nightclub fire in rhode island. this after fireworks went off during an overcrowded fire, setting fire to flammable foam on the wall. a bottleneck kept people from exiting from the front. have we learned lessons from the tragedy? we have the author of "killer show." he represented victims of the station nightclub fire. you hear about the tragedy in brazil, there are a lot of similarities to the tragedy in rhode island a decade ago. >> there really is. as humans, we are slow learners.

pyrotechnics in brazil. issues with overcrowding, flammable wall coverings and inadequate training of staff. >> since rhode island there, are other example where is pyro tech knicks have played a part in starting fires, indoor nightclubs five other times. you look at this. in argentina, 174 killed in 2004. ecuad ecuador, 14 there. take land, 64 in 2009. in russia, 156 dead and in brazil, we know the number now, revising it to 231 dead. why are we not learning these lessons? >> i can't say why. i think we value spectacle and this is an abject lesson for promoters and performers. >> making sure we have exits, making sure we have capacity rules and we're following them

in the u.s. has the nightclub industry changed in the u.s. at least since the 2003 fire? >> i think fortunately here in the u.s., we've had some valuable changes. in rhode island, the fire code has been strengthened to require sprinkling of buildings that hitherto had been grandfathered in and in most venues around the country if you go to a concert. preconcert announcement about exits and about available emergency procedures. conversely, we haven't learned completely. rhode island, since the fire, loosened its requirements for the public purchase of fireworks. there will be tragedies to come, unfortunately. >> let me ask you about what people can do. kuwait for new rules or legislation, or you can assume that a nightclub or big venue will have the proper evacuation procedures. in this case, it seems early moments of chaos on the ground, reporting that there were people who weren't letting people out of the building.

what can a club goer do? what can do you to be your own best fire marshal? >> that's the key phrase. the takeaway, can't rely upon others. club owners and promoters to ensure our safety. when you get to a venue, look at the venue. does it look well maintained. look at the staff. do they appear to be trained in any degree? as you make your way to your seat, have you passed through pitch points that might impede your exit. most important, when you get to your seat, look for the nearest exit. likely it won't be the up with you came in through and share the information with your party. the first sign of any trouble you are headed to the exit. >> john, here is the thing. these are 19 and 20-year-old kids, college kids, celebrating the last bit of summer before they are going to go back to school. i mean, i think when you are young, you just assume where you are is safe. you know, it's so hard to have an evacuation strategy for all of these things you go through in life. >> that's a mind-set we have to

change. i know all young people think they are immortal, but these incidents show the impossible can happen. and we really have to look out for ourselves. you have to go with your gut. if you get into a venue and it feels too crowded or wrong, leave. because there is no concert worth your life. >> john, thank you for joining us. certainly our hearts go out to the prayers, with all of them. >> i spoke with john. and he has been to concerts and said, you know what? i'm going to leave. >> in an airplane, i always look for the exits and a big, tall building, after september 11th, i think about how i'm going to get out. i don't think about that at a concert. maybe that has to change. be careful on the roads today. check the flights. a sloppy winter storm heading

and watched that interview, what do you see? >> i guess just seeing the interview itself is pretty stunning. i have worked in the area for the secretary of state, working for the white house, setting up various media opportunities and never heard of over seen anything like that, where you have the president actually side sbid with a member of his cabinet, any member of his cabinet. anyone at all. the president always goes alone, so i thought that was pretty unusual and clearly an attempt to try to shape the first draft of history of hillary clinton secretary of stateship. >> as i was watching, i wonder why do this? >> i suspect that prior to the benghazi attacks on september 11th of last year, the secretary

of state had a planned a series of interviews to sort of end her term, a kind of legacy set of interviews, and i suspect the combination of the benghazi attacks, the hearings, her illness, her travel and all of that controversy made it impossible to have a set of interviews with, say, "60 minutes" or others that would have normally been done at the end of terms, so this way, using this combination of the president and the secretary of state was a way to sort of highlight the successes of that era. >> and it really was a love fest. i mean, they were fawning over each other in some cases. not always been thus for hillary clinton and barack obama. the not so greatest hits from their relationship four years ago. >> tactics right out of karl rove's playbook. shame on you. >> shame on her, she is talking like annie oakley. >> maybe we should ask barack if he's comfortable, needs another llpillow.
